With the recent news of the Michigan Wolverines firing head coach Sherrone Moore, there is some unrest and skepticism about the future of the program. Whenever we see coaching changes on the college level, there is typically a lot of roster turnover that follows. That is just the modern world of the Transfer Portal, allowing players to move so freely with very few restrictions.

The 2026 recruiting class, which was a very solid group for the Wolverines, has already been compromised by the Moore news. We already saw tight end Matt Ludwig opt to find other opportunities out there. On Friday, the second defections took place when it was announced that White (Ga.) Cass offensive lineman Bear McWhorter also requested his release from Michigan.

While McWhorter wasn’t the most highly decorated recruit in the class, he is just a continued part of the chain reaction following the coaching news. Not only is the 2026 class being affected, but there is also expected to be a bit of a mass exodus from the current roster. That’s bad news for whoever ends up being the next head coach of the Wolverines.

Some of those early names to know include current Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, and Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham. The initial hot board for the job is extremely impressive, but it’ll be interesting to see what type of traction the Wolverines can create with everything going on. It is a difficult decision for everyone involved to navigate, especially with an ongoing investigation happening.

Bear McWhorter’s recruiting background

McWhorter was rated as a three-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the Georgia native ended up ranked as the No. 514 overall player, the No. 40 interior offensive lineman, and the No. 53 player in the state of Georgia for the 2026 recruiting class.

The 6-3.5, 293-pound offensive lineman originally committed to Michigan back in February. Despite just modest recruiting rankings, McWhorter held a much more impressive offer list.

Some of the top programs that the Wolverines beat out for McWhorter included Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Penn State, Florida, Tennessee, Miami, Florida State, Auburn, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Mississippi State, Louisville, South Carolina, Pitt, Arkansas, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Cincinnati, UNC, NC State, Virginia, and Stanford, among others.
