Michigan Wolverines aiming to land huge legacy talent that perfectly fits Kyle Whittingham’s defense
Experts suggest Charles Woodson Jr. could be one of the first recruits to commit to Michigan’s 2027 recruiting class
The Michigan Wolverines are off to an extremely slow start on their 2027 recruiting class. Any time there’s a coaching transition things can be difficult in that department, but Kyle Whittingham has yet to personally land anyone for their 2027 cycle. In fact, he’s already lost a commitment four-star quarterback recruit Peter Bourque (now likely heading to Penn State). Michigan needs a win to start building toward a bright future.
The good news? Recruiting industry experts are all beginning to converge on one likely candidate to spark some momentum on the recruiting trail for the 2027 Wolverines class.
Charles Woodson Jr. predicted to follow his father’s footsteps to Michigan
Charles Woodson Jr., yes the son of the Michigan Wolverines all-time great, might be the player who begins the wins for coach Whittingham’s first full recruiting cycle for 2027.
Michigan fans are already all familiar with Woodson Sr., who won Big Ten Freshman of the Year, First Team All-American honors, the Heisman Trophy, and much more when he was with the Wolverines. Will his son live up that that hype too? And actually play for Michigan too?
It would be nearly impossible for any college football player to live up to Woodson given how special he was for Michigan. Woodson snagged 16 interceptions in just three seasons. He added value on offense, rushing and receiving. He returned punts. Woodson did everything. His son may not be able to do all that for the Maize and Blue, but Michigan is certainly pushing to land him.
The Wolverines offered Woodson Jr. last summer when he was still fresh off his sophomore season thanks to his fast start and early development. Woodson ended up visiting with the Wolverines last October. At the time, the earliest official predictions for Woodson’s landing spot started flowing in, many experts believing he was headed to Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, there was no commitment from Woodson, and then the team (mainly Sherrone Moore) went through an embarrassing mess to end the season.
Since the dismissal of coach Moore and the transition to new head coach Whittingham, there hasn’t been a bunch coming from Woodson Jr.’s camp, but now industry experts are beginning to agree once again that Michigan is like his home. Sources from all the major players, 247Sports, Rivals, and here at A to Z Sports are all beginning to hear the same thing. It’s likely just a matter of when the news officially comes through (and it might still be a while).
Still, Whittingham could use a win, and soon. If he can land a major legacy star lik Woodson Jr. that could re-ignite the momentum for 2027. Currently the team only has three commits, ranking firmly outside the top 30 in the college football team recruiting rankings. Recarder Kitchen (four-star edge defender from Michigan), Tristan Dare (high three-star interior offensive lineman from Texas), and Louis Esposito (high three-star interior offensive lineman from Michigan) are the only three commits for 2027 at the moment. That must change if the Wolverines and fans want to have hope for life after Bryce Underwood.
