The Michigan Wolverines have pulled off a coup, securing the commitment of five-star quarterback and number-one recruit in the class of 2025 Bryce Underwood. Michigan flipped Underwood's commitment away from the LSU Tigers.
Underwood, a Michigan native playing for Belleville, became the highest-ranked recruit the Wolverines have ever landed. Underwood's commitment launched Michigan into the top ten of 247Sports' team rankings after entering the day in the teens.
Just a week ago, it was announced Michigan had put together a historic NIL package to try and secure Underwood's commitment. The Wolverines had assembled a deal worth over $10.5M.
According to MaxPreps, Underwood has completed 74.8% of his passes this season for 2,095 yards and 29 touchdowns (10 games). In his high school career, Underwood has completed 69.6% of his passes for 5,500 yards and 71 touchdowns with just six interceptions. What's even more impressive is that he's put up those numbers in just two seasons as a starter.
A to Z Sports' Ryan Roberts reported that some teams believe Underwood will be capable of starting immediately as a freshman. Here are snippets of On3's scouting report of Underwood:
"Premier arm talent who is one of the more gifted high school quarterback prospects in recent years. Combination of arm strength, pocket feel and processing ability makes him the top quarterback in the 2025 cycle. Touts a big-time arm with the ability to drive the ball with velocity to all levels of the field. Has the ability to touch every area of the field with ease. Has shown advanced skill as a passer. Comfortable delivering over the middle of the field from within the pocket. Consistently sticks the ball on receivers against tight coverage. Shows the ability to layer passes with touch and high-level location, especially downfield. Demonstrates the best pocket presence in the cycle entering the senior season. A vertical mover in the pocket who navigates pressure at a level well beyond his years. Has rhythmic feet when operating within structure. Doubles as a run threat with the ability to make defenders miss in space.”
Michigan is hot on the recruiting trail right now. Just a day before Underwood's announcement, Belleville teammate and fellow 2025 recruit Elijah Dotson flipped his commitment from Pitt to Michigan. Looking back, that might have been a sign.
It's hard to overstate how important of a win this is for Michigan and head coach Sherrone Moore. After a disappointing 2024 season full of low points, Moore and his coaching staff have secured the highest-ranked recruit ever in Underwood, as well as their highest-ranked offensive line recruit ever in Andrew Babalola.
This is a potentially program-changing addition. Amid a 5-5 season, Moore needed a sign the Wolverines could quickly become a playoff team again, and that he could recruit the kind of talented players that Jim Harbaugh could. With Underwood in the class, Moore delivered a resounding answer.
Who knows how much more momentum this could build for Michigan as well with early signing day right around the corner? What an enormous moment for Michigan.
