The Michigan Wolverines and head coach Sherrone Moore put on a show in his first full recruiting cycle as they brought in the sixth highest ranked freshman class for 2025. The number one quarterback in the nation, Bryce Underwood. Eight more Top 400 recruits. It was the exact kind of class Michigan needed to maintain momentum with a new head coach.
Now that the staff has shifted their focus to 2026 and 2027 they're beginning to see some returns on those efforts as well. The Wolverines only officially have three recruits committed for next year so far and none for 2027, but the unofficial and official visits are beginning to stack up. This week, one of the most important recruiting battles in the nation gave Wolverines some good news.
Cooper Witten, Five Star LB Recruit
Cooper Witten, the son of NFL Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten, has been soaring up the recruiting rankings after another impressive season as a sophomore. He is now a consensus Top 30 recruit in nation who can play safety, cornerback, linebacker, and more. All of the top teams in the country have been pursuing him over the last few months, so Witten decided to get some spring visits on the schedule. Michigan made the list.
Witten racked up some crazy defensive totals as a true freshman, tallying nearly 100 tackles and around double-digit passes defended, but then followed that up with an even crazier sophomore campaign. Witten scored seven receiving touchdowns, two pick six touchdowns, and a kick off return for a score on top of being one of the most versatile defensive players in the nation. He is a true game-changing talent. It's no wonder so many teams are chasing after him.
Although Witten has spent extensive time with Oklahoma and some of the major Texas in-state schools already, Michigan should still firmly be in the mix. Why? Witten has made it clear with both his words and his actions (via visits) that academics matter a lot to him in this process.
He's taken visits to Duke (over 1000 miles away), Baylor, and now will visit both Notre Dame and Michigan (on March 20th) among a handful of other top schools this spring all vying for his services. If Michigan can sell him on the combination of a chance at national championships, academics, early opportunity, and the recent strong track record of sending linebackers (where he likely projects best) to the NFL the Wolverines could quickly become a leader in this critical recruiting battle.
Michigan has of course recently sent Devin Bush Jr., Junior Colson, Cameron McGrone, and more to the league at the off-ball linebacker position. And of course, on top of that, the team continually sends a ton of defensive talent to the league. After Ernest Hausmann and Jaishawn Barham depart this season Michigan will be in dire need of new names to step up at linebacker too.
It's still early in this battle for five star defensive talent Cooper Witten, but it's good to see Sherrone Moore and company right there in the mix for yet another premier recruit.
