Michigan Wolverines suffer their first loss following the fallout from the firing of former head coach Sherrone Moore
Michigan football suffers their first loss after the firing of former head coach Sherrone Moore.
Michigan Football dropped a bombshell on college football this week when it announced it was firing head coach Sherrone Moore. With an investigation that is ongoing and an alleged assault charge pending, that situation feels like it will get a lot messier before it gets better. The worst part is that the Wolverine staff and leadership will have to try to keep moving forward, the best they can.
Whenever there is a coaching change, teams can be in a position to lose talented players from their roster. That roster turnover could come from the pre-existing roster and from the recruiting side. We saw our first loss in the Moore aftermath on Thursday when 2026 Billings (Montana) West star tight end Matt Ludwig was released from his National Letter of Intent. The Montana native had just signed with the team earlier this month.
Unfortunately for the Wolverine staffers who do the right things and the fanbase, this most likely won’t be the last defection from the Michigan roster.
Trying to retain as much talent as possible would be huge for the health of this program, including the 2026 class that just signed. There is a chance, however, that Ludwig’s announcement starts a bit of a chain reaction for a 2026 group that the Michigan staff was very high on.
Matt Ludwig’s recruiting background
Ludwig was considered to be a consensus four-star recruit by every major recruiting platform coming out of high school. He ended up ranked as the No. 200 overall player, No. 9 tight end, and No. 1 in the state of Montana for the 2026 recruiting class on the Rivals Industry ranking. Rivals also has Ludwig pegged as the No. 10 tight end in the class on their individual ranking.
Outside of Michigan, Ludwig was recruited by some of the other big hitters in college football. Some of his other top offers include Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida, Penn State, Auburn, Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Washington, Louisville, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Cal, Minnesota, Boston College, Stanford, Purdue, and Oregon State, among others.
As a junior, Ludwig was dynamic for Billings West. The 6-4, 240-pound pass catcher managed to haul in 53 receptions for 822 yards and four touchdowns. Ludwig added another 149 yards on the ground, while also handling some defensive and punting duties.
As a senior, Ludwig was just as impressive. He managed to record 50 receptions for 736 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 12 games. “Moose” also rushed for seven more touchdowns and recorded 14.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, and 21 quarterback hurries on the defensive side of the football.
