The Michigan Wolverines finally have their veteran quarterback out of the transfer portal after weeks of interest in several quarterbacks.

On Monday morning, the Michigan Wolverines landed the commitment of Fresno State transfer quarterback Mikey Keene.

Keene was a three-star recruit in the 2021 class and played his first two seasons at UCF before transferring to Fresno State in 2023, throwing for 2,976 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. This season, he threw for 2892 yards with 18 touchdowns, and 11 picks. Keene started the season opener at Michigan, going 22-of-36 for 235 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions

His time at UCF likely led to Michigan's initial interest, as he played for newly hired offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey during his time with the Golden Knights.

This was an important addition for the Wolverines, who have stated their interest in a veteran bridge quarterback for Bryce Underwood for weeks.

Now, they don't have to rush Underwood out as a starter right away, and they nab a quarterback familiar with their new system. In his collegiate career, Keene has been playing for multiple seasons and has spent time under coaches like Chip Lindsey, Jeff Tedford, and Kirby Moore.

Keene isn't the most talented quarterback out there, but he gets the ball out quickly. He works well in rhythm and is accurate delivering within structure. When plays break down, he has the ability to make plays happen with his legs, whether it's scrambling for a big gain on the ground or evading rushers to deliver a throw downfield.

This is a big win for Bryce Underwood and his development. Sure, he probably won't start early on. However, Michigan is set to lose their two best offensive linemen, and the ones that are left aren't very good. They are also overhauling the skill position rooms, trying to replace talent that left in the offseason.

Additionally, the defense is also set to have a complete remodel with the amount of players graduating and heading for the NFL Draft.

I would much rather have Keene out there trying to absorb all of this instead of putting it all on a true freshman quarterback, no matter how talented.

I'm sure there will be some plays that the staff will mix Underwood in for, but this is a prudent and smart move with the amount of turnover the Wolverines face. It's disappointing we won't see Underwood as much as a freshman, but this might be the best for him in the long run.
