The Michigan Wolverines offense has been completely broken all season long. Quarterback woes. Turnovers. Utter incompetence and inconsistency across the board. Could Sherrone Moore and company finally fix the offense against Michigan State in a huge Big Ten rivalry game?
Not exactly, but thanks to some extreme creativity and trick plays Michigan was able to pull off an impressive victory over the Spartans of Michigan State on Saturday, 24-17.
Michigan's offense started off slow yet again with three straight punts and 37 yards through their first few drives of the game. Davis Warren's dink and dunk approach with predictable run plays were not getting things done. Then on the Wolverines' fourth drive the team started introducing a few wrinkles that finally set up a few bigger run and pass plays. Offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell capped off the team's 64-yard scoring drive with this beauty of a call to Colston Loveland. Yes, that's Davis Warren, finally throwing a passing touchdown.
It was just a phenomenal play design that easily got their best offensive playmaker, Colston Loveland, wide open. Crossing action in the back field running both directions from the detached tight end Max Bredeson and wide receiver C.J. Charleston. Play action to Donovan Edwards on a fake up the middle. All three of those distracting options sucked the entire defense down to the line of scrimmage, leading to an easy toss and score.
The creativity on offense wasn't done after that first touchdown drive. Nope. Michigan began the second half introducing some Alex Orji run packages, including this complex call that you can see in Brandon Carr's post below.
It started with a strategic personnel change from Michigan. That allowed Michigan State to change their personnel quickly too, but the Wolverines weren't done. Both tight ends motioned, flipping sides. Running back Kalel Mullings motioned down out of pistol formation to standard shotgun placement. Tight end Max Bredeson motioned out, but then motioned back in. There were so many moving parts.
Then instead of running it to Kalel Mullings toward the side where Michigan had heavy blockers, Mullings became the lead blocker for Alex Orji to run off tackle to the right side. To call that play design creative would be selling it significantly short. Campbell was deep in his bag with play calls against Michigan State.
And just when fans might think the creativity on offense couldn't get any better, Michigan called a running back pass in the fourth quarter to seal the victory from Donovan Edwards to Colston Loveland for his second touchdown of the night.
The unfortunate reality after all the trickery and creativity on offense was that Michigan still largely struggled to maintain consistent momentum on offense for much of the game. They managed just 5.19 yards per play on the night, a mark that would still rank outside the Top 100 offenses for the season. However, the Wolverines improved in the one area they absolutely had to: turnovers.
Coach Sherrone Moore had emphasized the importance of taking care of the football for weeks. The team finally took care of the ball, never turning it over against the Spartans, and that was the difference in the ball game as Michigan won by seven points.
Hopefully Michigan can keep finding success via offensive creativity as the team moves forward in coming weeks, but it's hard to tell just how much more room the team has to improve with their current set of quarterbacks. Regardless, it seems the team has finally found some sort of momentum and newfound level of execution on offense they simply didn't display prior to this week. Let's hope that continues.
