Lost in the buzz surrounding Bryce Underwood and Ty Haywood was Michigan's recruiting flip of defensive back Jordan Young. Young, initially committed to play for the Clemson Tigers, flipped to the Wolverines earlier this week and signed with the team on Early Signing Day Wednesday.
When asked why Young, a North Carolina native, flipped away from the Tigers, he had a funny quip about the state of Clemson right now.
"The recruiting class wasn't that good at Clemson. I was the only defensive back at the time so I didn't really see a bright future with that. Michigan was hitting up in their recruiting class, getting many guys that I see could help me and I could help them as well. Coach Morgan is a great developer and we have a great relationship."
Young isn't wrong. As of the time of this writing, Clemson is 25th on 247Sports' team rankings with 15 commits. They did manage to add a defensive back in safety Jakarrion Kenan, however. The Wolverines, meanwhile, currently sit seventh and have five defensive backs including Young.
Clemson has their lowest recruiting class ever under Dabo Swinney this year, and things look pretty bleak for the Tigers. To make matters worse, Dabo's stubbornness regarding the transfer portal might mean Clemson won't have a chance to replenish the talent they lost from this recruiting class in the portal.
Meanwhile, the Michigan Wolverines are pushing for a top-five recruiting class in 2025. Thanks to a revamped NIL program, the Wolverines are adding elite player after elite player in this class, and they've already been linked to a few talented players in the transfer portal as well.
The Wolverines needed to restock their secondary with multiple players graduating and entering the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. Young, as well as the rest of their defensive back class, could see playing time virtually right away.
