As the dust has begun to settle from the shocking Sherrone Moore saga, the Michigan Wolverines have begun their search for their next head coach.

What should have been a promising search with plenty of leads has suddenly fallen apart over the weekend, and it doesn’t look to be getting better anytime soon. There’s a real possibility that, barring some unforeseen miracle, the Wolverines might be heading into the new year without a head coach, a possibility they were so desperate to avoid just a couple short weeks ago.

Michigan’s head coaching search has been a disaster

As we at A to Z reported, the Wolverines entered last weekend with two names at the forefront of their search: Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham. Michigan was ready to send the house for DeBoer to make him their next head coach, provided he lost to the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday in the first round of the College Football Playoff. If he won, their pivot was going to be Dillingham.

However, that unraveled by early Saturday morning. In a stunning move, Dillingham announced he would sign an extension to remain at his alma mater Arizona State instead of taking the job at Michigan. In Dillingham’s own words, Michigan “never offered” him the job despite the interest. A search that brought up two promising candidates fell apart in a span of less than 12 hours, and Michigan has been left grasping at straws.

So what’s next for the Wolverines? Where do they go from here? Well, from the sound of it, they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Michigan’s coaching search could go into the new year

Well, keep your expectations low for the search, based on how this has unfolded. ESPN’s Dan Wetzel dashed any hopes of this search being resolved before Christmas comes to Ann Arbor.

“Based on everything I’ve heard, and with the caveat that things can always change quickly, I wouldn’t expect the Michigan coaching search to be resolved any time soon” Wetzel tweeted on Saturday evening.

Michigan has made it adamantly clear that they have wanted a new head coach in place by January 2nd, when the transfer portal opens. However, the search hasn’t gone their way, and it’s looking like they might not even have the search wrapped up by the time the window opens.

Throughout this process, the administrators and figures running this search have already eliminated several candidates. Washington’s Jedd Fisch has been all but officially eliminated, while Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz reportedly flunked his interviews and doesn’t have many fans in the search, leaving their pool of candidates a mixed bag of the same names they’ve already crossed off or pushed down their list. The Wolverines are running out of options.

Michigan’s coaching search is looking more like someone constantly re-opening the fridge, hoping the food inside changes every time they open the door. Jokes on them, it’s just lettuce, and it might be time for them to eat up.
