Sherrone Moore and company are trying their best this spring to ensure that their new five star quarterback Bryce Underwood has sufficient weapons and protection around him to succeed (and quickly).

As we've discussed here at A to Z Sports this spring, every single major group recruiting visit has been heavily focused on offense. They have offers out to nearly 50 wide receivers in the 2026 recruiting class. The effort has been there, but the results have been lagging in terms of actual commitments given that Michigan still has just three commits for next spring.

The good news is they continue to enter into top threes and top fives for a number of high pedigree recruits. However, this week the Wolverines got some rough news on one of their five star targets, as he is narrowing his search.

Jackson Cantwell, Five Star OT Recruit

Jackson Cantwell, the number one overall player in the 2026 recruiting class and a five star offensive tackle has been the most highly coveted talent in the nation for multiple years now. He finally narrowed his search down to a top five here recently already (including Michigan), but according to multiple reports he's trending toward three schools in particular: Georgia, Miami, and Oregon.

Cantwell still has his five official visits scheduled this summer with Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Missouri, and Oregon, so things could change, but the recent momentum sounds like it's moving away from Michigan.

This news is a bit strange, considering he visited with the Wolverines twice since December, and will make it a third in just over a month's time. It may be discouraging to hear that a top three is emerging without Michigan involved, but there's still time. As long as Michigan can follow up their extreme interest in Cantwell with a proper NIL and compensation package for him (like they did with Bryce Underwood), the Wolverines should be in prime position to land Cantwell.

Both Georgia and Miami have rather uneasy future quarterback situations at the moment. Gunner Stockton and Ryan Puglisi are still quite unproven in terms of their upside for Georgia. Carson Beck will be departing Miami after this season for the NFL. Meanwhile, Michigan has five star Bryce Underwood who already looks ready to star as of this spring. Oregon may be the toughest team to beat, considering the stacked QB room they seem to have set for the next few years at the moment.

Now that Myles Hinton has left for the NFL, Evan Link has been terribly inconsistent, and the Wolverines have exactly zero proven offensive tackles outside of that, Cantwell clearly could step in from day one as the full-time starter in 2026. Michigan will almost certainly need him to live up to his five star billing right away if they can land him. Let's just hope Sherrone Moore and company close the deal.
