After the disaster that was the 2024 season for the Michigan Wolverines' quarterback room, they are completely starting from scratch on the most important position in football.

The Michigan Wolverines obviously landed one of the biggest recruits of all time in Bryce Underwood, but Fresno State transfer quarterback Mikey Keene is providing some stiff competition, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him start the season when the Wolverines take on the New Mexico Lobos on August 30th.

Head coach Sherrone Moore was highly complimentary of Mikey Keene this week, and it feels like the starting job is Keene's to lose over the offseason.

"I think the first thing we saw was when we played against him. I remember watching him in the summer. I said, damn, this kid’s pretty good. We’ve got to deal with this dude in game one. He’s making all these throws. He’s experienced. I did a study of all the guys that had the most snaps, and he’s played the most snaps in college football on our team, over 2,000-something snaps. A guy that’s played a lot of football, understands the moments, understands the big moments, understands what it takes to be really good. He’s been a great addition for our football program….Obviously, size is a little different. But talk about a guy that knows the game, extremely intelligent, wants to be a coach after he gets done playing. So the experience piece is the biggest piece there."

The coaching staff made it a priority to bring in a veteran quarterback out of the transfer portal to compete with Underwood throughout the offseason, and Keene was one of their top targets, given his familiarity with new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey.

While it's far too early to make any claim about who will start under center for the Wolverines in Week 1, it feels far more likely than not that it'll be Mikey Keene. So far, he's aced his initial tests to earn the job.
