The Michigan Wolverines held their Maize versus Blue Spring Game on Saturday as head coach Sherrone Moore and his promising team of talents took the field at the Big House.
While the game was largely dominated by the blue team for much of the exhibition, there were positives to glean from all over. Especially when it came to the play of the running backs and the offensive scheme as a whole.
Fans clearly have a lot more to be excited about on offense this year compared to last season's shameful mess of disappointment at quarterback. The Wolverines finished the 2024 season ranked outside the Top 100 in most meaningful offensive categories, especially when it came to the passing game. So needless to say, Saturday's action was certainly already an improvement already.
Sherrone Moore was asked quite a bit about the offense following the spring game, and couldn't help but share his excitement for his new running back duo in Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall:
"Really excited [about Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall]. You saw the little flash of Justice Haynes when he bounced that one to the left. He's a guy that's got home run speed and ability. He's been a great leader. A guy that's obviously come from a different program in Alabama. He showed us what [he can do]. And Jordan [Marshall], he's just worked his tail off, trying to emulate [Haynes] as much as he can. So, it's been a great combination, and they push [other teammates too]."
It's no surprise to hear that Justice Haynes has immediately taken on a leadership role, setting the tone for the backfield and perhaps the entire offense. He impressed Nick Saban from day one dating back to his early spring days with Alabama, and he's apparently only gotten better since then.
Haynes had the most explosive run play of the day as he scampered for nearly 30 yards taking a carry off the left side, igniting some loud excitement from the fans on site Saturday. Michigan fans can certainly expect much more where that came from.
After the scrimmage Justice Haynes shared how happy he was to be in a diverse, complete, pro style offense that can run just about any scheme imaginable. His teammate Jordan Marshall expressed feeling the same as he's talked about how the offense opens things up much more this season thanks to some deep shots built in.
Sherrone Moore clearly feels the same way as he shared his thoughts on the offense after being asked about Marshall's comments on lighter boxes and space up front:
"Yeah, that's part of the reason I brought [new offensive coordinator] Chip [Lindsey] in. It's been fun. We've created some deep shots. And created some different pass concepts to help us on offense. We'll continue to do that. It's not like–the offense isn't just put together right now. We have the whole summer to evaluate and see, and do what we need to do to go win the game."
It doesn't sound like Michigan is anywhere close to done when it comes to building out their offense for this season, but the progress they've made so far is certainly keeping both of the Wolverines leading running backs happy.
Marshall especially should be excited about lighter boxes since the vast majority of his work last year came against Alabama in the Reliaquest Bowl where he faced stacked defensive fronts on just about every carry. Still, he was able to star in that game, putting up 100 yards on the ground (as you can look back on in the post below).
If the Michigan offense can find some real success passing the ball with new five star quarterback Bryce Underwood (or veteran transfer Mikey Keene), that should definitely bring far more balance to the Wolverines offense. And if talented running backs like Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall have significant space to work with opposing defenses better prepare to get shredded.
