The Michigan Wolverines have made the final two schools in one of the premier defensive backs in the 2026 recruiting class. The No. 1 cornerback in the nation is set to announce his next destination on August 2, and the Wolverines have been fighting an interesting array of contenders for his services. Four-star Davon Benjamin Jr. recently cut his list from five to two, and the Wolverines are looking to score a bit of an upset.

The California native is also considering the Oregon Ducks. He's no longer viewing Texas, North Carolina, or Washington in the same way as these Big Ten headliners. While they all made his Monday announcement, Hayes Fawcett of On3 later added that it's down to these two.

“Michigan, I’d say just the fact that who they are, they’re going to preach that to you every day, it’s going to show up in their work,” Benjamin said about the Wolverines. “I love the fact that Michigan has great people in the building. A new head coach, great dude, and he obviously cares for this football stuff. But at the end of the day, he’s going to make sure you’re taken care of off the field. You can walk around with that Michigan degree anywhere in life and be successful with it. So, really, I love the care that they’ve got on and off the field.”

The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder has been a weapon on both sides of the ball in high school. With 34 catches, 404 receiving yards, six interceptions, and 45 tackles, Benjamin has some shades of Travis Hunter to his game.

Both Oregon and Michigan rank in the top 10 of the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes, and bolstering their defensive talent with Benjamin would go a long way. With his return prowess, he could be an impact freshman.

Here's what he previously said about Michigan.

“Michigan, I love Michigan … They’re truly top tier in the way they take care of their kids and how they approach every day. With them being the most winning franchise in college football, their approach to everyday life and how they get after it every day. It isn’t a cakewalk every day. Every day you got to go in there, you got to grind. And then especially the people you’re going to meet off the field. They’re going to just pour into you with a lot of great ideas, a lot of great things, a lot of great mentors. Overall, the development piece and the way they take care of their kids stands out.”
