The Michigan Wolverines have had an overall successful season, finishing 9-3 and were one win away from the College Football Playoff. However, the taste of defeat after losing The Game to Ohio State has soured this season and cast a pall on the season as a whole, and Michigan fans are justifiably upset after looking largely uncompetitive for the whole game.

While there are other moves that need to be made, the Michigan Wolverines took a big step forward on Wednesday when they announced they were parting ways with special teams coordinator JB Brown, per head coach Sherrone Moore.

A necessary move for Michigan to make

It wasn’t all bad for Brown and Michigan. Last season in his first year as special teams coordinator, he helped Dominic Zvada finish as a Lou Groza Award semifinalist, and Michigan had the fourth-best special teams in the country per FEI. However, Michigan’s special teams play cratered across the board, falling to 59th in FEI and 117th per FPI. Zvada regressed from a 95.5% kicker to 68.2%, while the Wolverines averaged an abysmal 42 yards per punt. Michigan ranked 125th in the nation, gaining 15.24 yards per kick.

Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore made a statement to the Detroit Free Press regarding the decision.

“After thoroughly evaluating our special teams’ performance throughout the season, I made the decision to make a change that was in the best interest of the program. I want to thank JB Brown for his unwavering dedication and the positive impact he’s had on our players and program. We are grateful for his commitment, and I wish him nothing but success as he continues his coaching career.”

This had to be done with how utterly lifeless Michigan’s special teams fared all season long. The Wolverines still need to make plenty of adjustments moving forward if they want to get back to being competitive against Ohio State, but this was a step in the right direction.
