Earlier on Wednesday, news broke that the Michigan Wolverines had fired head coach Sherrone Moore for an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. The details of that situation are still being released, but Michigan had enough evidence after a substantial investigation to fire Moore “for cause,” meaning his contract with the school was declared null and void.

Now, the saga is taking another unexpected turn. According to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel, police in Saline, Michigan, “assisted in locating and detaining Moore” and turned him over to Pittsfield Township for an investigation into potential charges on Wednesday evening.

Sherrone Moore arrested after Michigan fired him for cause

Moore had led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record this season, earning a bid to the Citrus Bowl to take on the Texas Longhorns. In the wake of his firing, the Wolverines have named Biff Poggi as their interim head coach. Poggi served as the interim coach for the Wolverines this season when Moore underwent a self-imposed suspension against Central Michigan and Nebraska for his role in the Connor Stalions sign-stealing saga.

Rumors are already flying around as to why Moore has been arrested, but this is a stunning new development. At this time, it’s not clear why he was detained. As of Wednesday night, Moore has been officially booked as an inmate of Washtenaw County Jail. Moore was booked as part of an “assault investigation.”

More details surface about arrest

As reported by Tony Paul of the Detroit News, more information surrounding the Moore arrest has surfaced. The police were called for an alleged assault at 4:10 p.m. Eastern, which was before Moore’s firing was announced.

Moore was eventually booked in Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m. Police made contact in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road, near apartments.

That’s the most recent update concerning Moore. Until additional information comes out, Pittsfield Township chief of police Patrick Gray provided a statement for the media.

“The incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community,” Gray said.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details.

“Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as possible.”

This is a sensitive story, and details are scarce as the investigation is still ongoing. We will update this story as more details emerge.
