Why most recent Michigan Wolverines transfer portal addition was their smartest move of the offseason
The Michigan Wolverines adding veteran cornerback Smith Snowden was the smartest move of their entire offseason.
The Michigan Wolverines haven’t been overly explosive in terms of moves out of the transfer portal, in the sense of moves that dominate headlines or send the talking heads into a tizzy. However, they’ve made smart, prudent moves to add talent in all three phases of the game as they try to revitalize the team in Kyle Whittingham‘s first season at the helm.
Their most recent addition out of the transfer portal might have been their wisest, however, as they desperately needed a playmaker at his position to fix what was a leaky room in 2025.
Smith Snowden exactly what Michigan Wolverines needed on defense
Last season, both of Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry were…inconsistent at best (to put it politely) at cornerback. Their coverage and run defense would come and go in waves, and effort in the room was fairly milquetoast. Both of them are returning for the 2026 season, but it’s not a cornerback room I would be particularly thrilled with running back after the way the 2025 season unfolded.
Snowden changes the math there. Snowden brings inside-outside versatility at cornerback, and would often match up with where a team aligned their favorite wide receiver. He held likely first-round pick Jordyn Tyson to just 15 yards on nine targets, even recording a PBU in their matchup. The Wolverines don’t have to worry about physicality or effort with Snowden, as he often plays with his head on fire and flies around the field.
Snowden adds an element of consistency and playmaking that was missing from the cornerback unit. He adds both production and coverage ability, something that Berry and Hill have yet to fully put together as Wolverines (which might not be entirely their fault, given how poorly coached the unit was over the last two seasons).
Bringing Snowden into the secondary now gives the Wolverines much-needed versatility in that room and gives them three experienced starters. Snowden’s experience as a nickel is a much needed boost as well, given that both TJ Metcalf routinely blew coverages out of the slot. Michigan now has an experienced, capable player they can move around and ask to cover and matchup with top receivers, something they simply haven’t been able to rely upon in recent years aside from Will Johnson.
Will Smith Snowden’s addition to the roster make waves to the same degree of Cam Coleman to the Texas Longhorns, Chaz Coleman to the Tennessee Volunteers, or Sam Leavitt to the LSU Tigers? Not likely. However, it’s a smart, shrewd, and critical decision we all expect from Kyle Whittingham, and it’s the type of right move Michigan needed to make out of the portal.
