Friday night’s loss to the Virginia Cavaliers isn’t what anyone expected for the Florida State Seminoles. This is a team that was ranked No. 8 in the country and was supposed to win that game on the road, despite Virginia being pretty good.

But now, FSU head coach Mike Norvell is getting real with himself when it comes to the new direction of his team.

“We have to go back to work. We lost our first conference game, so there is nothing but opportunity ahead of us. There are some big steps that we need to take as a football team,” Norvell told reporters after the loss. “We have to be better.”

The Seminoles are in a position where they can easily bounce back. But it’s clear that they have some work to do.

The Seminoles need to fix some important things

Virginia is a good football team, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. But the Miami Hurricanes, who they will play next, are even better. The Hurricanes are one of the best teams in the country, and you could even make a case for them being the best team in the country. However, the Noles still have a good chance to beat them.

If they want to do that, and potentially take back over a seat in the AP top-10, they really have to fix some of the things the defense was doing. On offense, they were solid, but they have to stop turning the ball over. Tommy Castellanos looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the country, maybe the best. Some of the throws he was making were insane.

However, none of that matters if your receivers don’t catch the ball, and your defense can’t get off the field. The defense is the real area they have to focus on. Coming into the game, they had a top-five defense in the country in yards allowed and points allowed. This game helped us all learn that this defensive line, which doesn’t have anyone over 300 pounds, cannot stop the run. They will have to figure that out before next week, or it will be even worse.

So, yes, Norvell is right, and if this guy wants to keep his job, because the fans are calling for it on Saturday Morning, then he will need to fix things and coast to a smooth finish of the 2025 season.
