If everything goes to plan for the Texas Longhorns in 2024, redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning, a former five-star recruit, won't start a single game this fall.

But as we all know, things rarely go to plan in college football.

Manning is set to serve as the backup to quarterback Quinn Ewers in 2024.

Ewers, however, has missed games in each of the last two seasons at Texas due to injury (he missed three games in 2022 and he missed two games in 2023).

It seems inevitable that Manning will need to start at some point for Texas in 2024. But how many games will he need to start?

CBS Sports national college football writer Shehan Jeyarajah, who is based in Texas, thinks Manning will start at least a game for the Longhorns this fall. But he doesn't think he'll start much more than that.

"I'm going to say under (2.5 games)," said Jeyarajah on the Split Zone Due podcast. "I do think he starts one because Quinn Ewers has been injury prone, he's missed games each of the last two years. I don't think Quinn Ewers is going to get benched. There's a lot to like with Arch Manning. But at the same time, this is Texas going into the SEC, this is with a third-year starting quarterback and it's very rare that any third year starting quarterback is not in a better position than a redshirt freshman….Arch Manning is the future, there's no doubt about it."

Texas hopes they don't need to rely on Manning in 2024. But if they lose their starting quarterback for any period of time, it has to be a good feeling to know that a potential future first round draft pick is waiting in the wings.
