Notre Dame football is amidst the most unique spring practice schedule in history. After the longest college football season in its history, the Fighting Irish opted for an abbreviated practice period. Some programs wanted to completely move away from spring practice, but head coach Marcus Freeman wanted to maintain it.
Now that we are right near the halfway point, it is important to check in on progress. Here are some questions that still do remain. There is also a lot of clarity that we have gained, and will continue to do so over the next couple of weeks.
The left tackle decision
Heading into the spring, most envisioned that left tackle would be a battle between Charles Jagusah and Anthonie Knapp. With Knapp limited coming back from injury, you would think that Jagusah would have the inside track to earning the job. So far through spring, Jagusah has spent all of his time at right guard. Sophomore Guerby Lambert has also been exclusively at right tackle. This feels like it’s being set up for Knapp to win the job.
Quarterback battle rages on
Notre Dame is amidst a deep quarterback battle. All three signal callers have a unique selling point. With Steve Angeli, you are getting all of the intangibles you would want. CJ Carr is viewed as the golden boy, while Kenny Minchey might have the best raw tools. The biggest question for the Irish staff in this quarterback decision is whether they fall to the floor, or make the jump toward the ceiling. We won’t have the answer to that right now, but could get some insight once spring practice has concluded.
Will Notre Dame add to the Vyper position?
If both Boubacar Traore and Jordan Botelho return fully healthy from injury, then the Vyper position has a chance to be stellar for the Irish. With those injuries, however, it does leave some legitimate question marks. Loghan Thomas is also weighing at 213 pounds right now, which doesn’t help the confidence in the position. With former Stanford pass rusher David Bailey entering the portal, Notre Dame should be all in on getting him to South Bend.
Wide receiver room
We are hearing great things about the wide receiver room but we heard the same things last spring. Everyone assumes Jaden Greathouse is going to take a big step forward, but some are waiting to see. The Irish are without Malachi Fields this spring, and Jordan Faison is on a limited basis while playing lacrosse. Can someone like Cam Williams or KK Smith step up? There are going to be questions until there aren’t anymore.
