Following Notre Dame’s 66-7 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers last weekend, Irish fans are hoping for the momentum to continue on Saturday against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. One of the major issues surrounding this Notre Dame program under head coach Marcus Freeman is how bipolar they can seem on a week-to-week basis.
If Notre Dame hadn’t lost to Northern Illinois a couple of weeks ago, this game could have been very interesting. There’s a chance they may have somewhat overlooked them, and limped to a less than impressive performance. Losing to a MAC program like that at home completely changes the question, and it feels like a game this Irish team will be very prepared for.
The team played pissed off last week, and that led to 362 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. I expect the offense to play with a similar disposition. Look for the offense to assert their dominance, and play with a high level of urgency and aggression.
On defense, it feels like the unit will continue doing what they do well. Any hope Miami (OH) has rests on the right arm of starting quarterback Brett Gabbert. If you are able to pressure him, and disrupt his rhythm, that unit suffers dramatically. Notre Dame’s pass rush came alive against Purdue, and that should continue this week.
If it does, the Irish should also be able to force a couple of key turnovers. If you give them short fields, good luck. Notre Dame should be able to run the football, but this feels like the game that Irish quarterback Riley Leonard and this passing attack finally break out. This victory should be decisive.
The loss to Northern Illinois won’t be erased from the fans of Notre Dame for a long time. The only thing that can make up for it is growth. This is still an Irish team with a lot of potential, but the margin for error is practically nonexistent. Stacking games is important, and that’s what I expect on Saturday.
Final Prediction: Notre Dame 41, Miami (OH) 6
