Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame football program head into a very important week. After a disappointing two-game stretch to begin the 2025 college football season, the Fighting Irish are now desperate for a victory to get back to their winning ways. The Purdue Boilermakers, who appear much improved under head coach Barry Odom, will be heading to South Bend for a matchup to average their 2024 embarrassing loss.

During that 2024 matchup, Notre Dame was able to dismantle the Boilermakers by a score of 66 to 7. Following last season’s debacle, Purdue made the decision to move on from head coach Ryan Walters. Their search eventually ended up taking them to Coach Odom, who did a tremendous job at UNLV over the last couple of years. Although they are on the front end of the rebuild, there is a lot more energy around the program right now compared to what it was. They will prepare to play their best game this weekend.

On the offensive side of the football, there are a lot of things to continue to build on if you are the Fighting Irish. Freshman quarterback CJ Carr has done some very positive things for the passing attack during the first two games, and Carr should continue to grow. He has a talented running back duo of Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price behind him, and they were able to go over 200 yards of total offense a week ago against Texas A&M. The offensive line is also trending upward, which is a good sign for future success.

For the Notre Dame defense, there is much less optimism right now. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash has been getting the brunt of the negativity this week, and he deserves every ounce of it. There is way too much talent on this defense for that unit to go from outstanding to awful in one offseason. Coach Ash is going to have to start getting more out of Boubacar Traore, Drayk Bowen, Adon Shuler, and Christian Gray to somehow turn this thing around.
