Every Monday during a game week, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman meets with the media to discuss the previous game, preview their upcoming opponent, and discuss everything about Notre Dame football. Injuries, and perspective on program development were also main points of conversation.
During the availability, Coach Freeman was asked about the college football playoff rankings that will be coming out on Tuesday. As expected, he didn’t give that question a ton of attention. Coach Freeman is a very process driven individual, and the next step is the most important.
“It has no impact on our future,” Freeman said about the impending playoff rankings. “We have to make sure right now we take care of what’s important. If we think the rankings of tomorrow are going to be what the rankings are at the end of the season, then we are crazy. We have to take care of what we have right in front of us, and that’s our opportunity to prepare for Florida State.”
In terms of the rankings being released on Tuesday, it obviously does matter, but it is merely a starting point. You can gauge how the committee perceives your team, and the quality of your resume. That is what is most on the table for Notre Dame on Tuesday, a baseline understanding for how they fit into the discussion right now.
If this Irish team wins their last four games, they will be a part of that playoff field. If they drop another game, then they won’t. It’s really that easy. Notre Dame will need to be 11-1 to be guaranteed a spot in the dance. From there, they should have a chance to be a major player when their play matters most.
