After an enigmatic start to the season for the Notre Dame football program, the team was able to get back on track with a 66-7 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers last weekend. This Irish team must now stack days, and put together another strong outing against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. Continuing the momentum will be huge.

This is especially true on the offensive side of the football, which has been the most frustrating part of this Notre Dame team thus far. Mike Denbrock and that offensive attack needs to find their stride, and continue their ascensions. Here are the keys to watch this Saturday.

Come out with energy

For the first time in what seems like forever, the Notre Dame offense came out with energy last weekend against Purdue. They seemed to be playing with urgency, and more importantly, with physical intent.

We will know very early on in this game whether the Irish are focused and ready to go. Whatever the offense looks like, keep it fast and aggressive. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to set the tone early in the game.

Hold up in pass protection

This has been an issue through three games for Notre Dame, and it’s understandable why. When you have an inexperienced offensive line, pass protection can be a major issue. It is so predicated on communication, and understanding where pressure is coming from. From a talent perspective, the Irish line is gifted enough to handle most 1-on-1 matchups, but when they are confused, that can obviously change.

With several starts now under everyone’s belt, it should naturally get better. Miami (OH) does have some players who can get after the quarterback, including EDGE Brian Ugwu and linebacker Ty Wise. Keeping them quiet would be huge.

Create explosive plays

The RedHawks have no problem sending a lot of pressure, both from the second and sometimes even third level. For a team predicated on various pressures, you are going to see a lot of man coverage on the back end. Notre Dame is going to have to win some 1-on-1 matchups. It begins outside, where players like Beaux Collins, Kris Mitchell, and possibly Jordan Faison will have a Tom of opportunities.

The middle of the defense also isn’t the best to handle man coverage responsibilities, which means getting guys like Jaden Greathouse and the tight ends should be a good proposition. Quarterback Riley Leonard is due for a big day passing, and there’s no reason it can’t happen on Saturday.
