Notre Dame football has been recruiting on an extremely high level under head coach Marcus Freeman. That is especially true on defense, which makes sense with Coach Freeman’s background. Outside of continuing to build up the defensive tackle depth chart, there isn’t a position on defense that hasn’t gotten deeper over the last few years.

At linebacker, it has become an embarrassment of riches for the Irish defense. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash has a chance to work with a deep and talented group heading into the 2025 college football season, which includes Drayk Bowen, Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, Jaiden Ausberry, Madden Faraimo, and Jaylen Sneed. It is a very easy sell for top linebackers to come to South Bend right now.

Even while Notre Dame is trying to finalize things with former Michigan linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary to take over for the departed Al Washington, they are trending quickly with one of the more dynamic athletes in the 2027 recruiting class. Akron (Ohio) Archbishop Hoban star linebacker Brayton Feister has quickly become a player to know for the Fighting Irish after offering him recently. Most believe that Notre Dame could be very tough to beat for the Ohio star.

It will be interesting to see how things trend once Jean-Mary is officially signed, settled, and gets involved in the recruiting process. For now, the vibes are extremely high between the Irish and Feister. When you pop on his junior film, it is hard not to get excited about the future and all the talent that he brings to the table as a football player.

Brayton Feister’s recruiting background

Feister is considered to be a near-consensus four-star recruit, the exception being Rivals, which has him rated as a three-star player right now. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the Ohio native is currently rated as the No. 266 overall player, the No. 12 athlete, and the No. 7 player from the state of Ohio for the 2027 recruiting class. ESPN is the highest on Feister right now, sitting as the No. 162 overall player in the class currently.

Despite some modest rankings, several of the top programs in all of college football are pursuing Feister. Some of his top offers currently include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, USC, Indiana, Louisville, Kentucky, Missouri, Pitt, Boston College, Arizona State, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, SMU, Cincinnati, Maryland, Cal, UCLA, and Purdue, among several others.

As a junior in 2025 for Archbishop Hoban, Feister put together a dominant campaign. In 12 games, the 6-3, 230-pound athlete managed to collect 133 total tackles, 39 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions. On offense, Feister also rushed for 1,098 yards and 17 touchdowns on just 116 carries, an average of 9.5 yards per carry. This is a dynamic two-way athlete with outstanding upside.
