The coaching chaos in college football continued over the weekend when the Auburn Tigers parted ways with head coach Hugh Freeze. Whenever coaches get fired, there tends to be a ton of movement in today’s version of college football via the Transfer Portal, as well as decommitments on the recruiting side. You can expect both to be the case for Auburn, and that could allow some teams to profit because of their misfortune, including Notre Dame.

Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff have shown their willingness to attack needs in the portal, although the high school route will always be preferred. There are, however, several current Auburn players that the Irish should keep close eyes on if they choose to use the portal. There is no guarantee that they will, but the homework on the roster begins now.

WR Eric Singleton Jr. (Jr.)

Of anyone on the roster with remaining eligibility, Singleton would probably be the target who makes the most sense for Notre Dame. The former Georgia Tech speedster was actually on the team’s radar last offseason while he was in the portal, and they made a compelling offer to him. Quite simply, you just don’t say no to this type of speed. The 5-10, 178-pound pass catcher can make plays after the catch, while also taking the top off. I’d give Singleton another look if I were the Irish.

It is possible that Singleton opts to enter the 2026 NFL Draft. With how the NIL space functions nowadays, however, you just never know.

WR Cam Coleman (So.)

This is a pure pipe dream, but Coleman would be an incredible addition to any program that wants him. The 6-3, 200-pound pass catcher is the boundary presence that every program clamors for. Barring something unforeseen, Coleman is going to be a high selection in the 2027 NFL Draft class. His ability to win in the air is incredible, and there is still a lot of meat on the bone here. The market for Coleman would be massive, so it’s probably unlikely, but wow, he would look great making catches in the blue and gold for CJ Carr.

DT Malik Blocton (So.)

At 6-3 and 300 pounds, Blocton is a dense and physical defensive lineman with all the potential in the world. He has recorded eight tackles for loss over his first two seasons, an impressive number considering he’s a part of a heavy rotation. If there is any interest in the Alabama native, he would give Notre Dame a nice interior presence with a ceiling to continue tapping into. Outside of the wide receivers, this would be my top target on the roster.

EDGE Jared Smith (Fr.)

A former top recruit, Smith is an impressive athlete at 6-6 and 260 pounds. He has shown some flashes as a freshman, mixing in at a deeper defensive end room. There are no ties between Smith and Notre Dame, so it’s probably unlikely that there is a ton of interest for the talented defender. He is, however, one of the more talented players on the Auburn roster, so at least doing your research is a good idea.

CB Devin Williams (Fr.)

If his name sounds familiar, it’s because Notre Dame had an extremely high opinion of Williams during the 2025 recruiting class. The Georgia native opted for the Auburn Tigers earlier in the process, and despite the Irish keeping close contact, that’s where he ended up signing. With Notre Dame having freshman Dallas Golden working in the nickel and a stellar 2026 class coming in, I’m not sure this team would pursue Williams. The 5-9, 168-pound cover man is certainly talented, however, and a player Mike Mickens knows well.
