From a historical perspective, you won’t find a program that has had more success developing the tight end position than Notre Dame. Names such as Dave Casper, Mark Bavarro, Tyler Eifert, Cole Kmet, and Michael Mayer bring back a lot of fond memories. When you look around the NFL currently, there is a good chance you come across a former Irish standout at the position.

That is true with the Chicago Bears, where Kmet stars. During his five years in Chicago, Kmet has hauled in 258 receptions for 2,592 yards and 19 touchdowns. While Kmet is the guy for the Bears, they seem to have found his partner in crime. Once again, it is a player that Notre Dame fans will recognize.

It was reported by NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport that former Miami Dolphins tight end Durham Smythe will also be signing with the Bears. Smythe had a previous relationship with new Chicago head coach Ben Johnson.

In seven years with the Dolphins, Smythe had made 132 receptions for 1,228 yards and three touchdowns. While he isn’t a dynamic receiving threat, Smythe is known as a very good blocker. That’s the biggest positive he brings to the table.

Smythe is a bit older than Kmet, but the two were actually teammates for one season at Notre Dame in 2017. During that lone campaign, they combined to make 17 receptions for 258 yards and a score. Hopefully they will be a more potent pairing in 2025 for the Bears.
