Former Notre Dame legend just said something bold about a current Irish star that the majority of CFB fanbases won’t want to hear
Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr is beginning to turn a lot of heads. Some former Fighting Irish legends are taking notice.
When you think about elite quarterback play for Notre Dame football, at least since the turn of the century anyway, former Fighting Irish legend Brady Quinn is typically the first player mentioned. During his four-year career from 2003-06, Quinn rewrote the record books for the Irish. He finished his career with 11,762 passing yards, 95 passing touchdowns, and six more scores on the ground.
Quinn had multiple top-four finishes for the Heisman Trophy Award during his career, and was selected in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He was a tremendous football player for the Irish, was insanely productive, and was also a great leader. You would think Quinn knows what other really good quarterbacks look like.
It appears that Quinn is very firmly on the CJ Carr bandwagon so far, and he proceeded to make a strong statement about the redshirt freshman signal caller. He isn’t shying away from his praise for the young quarterback, and other fanbases around college football are sure to push back on Quinn’s statement.
“People will think this opinion is bias, but go watch the tape,” Quinn said on X. “No one is playing better at QB in the country than CJ Carr. Probably a week away from getting more hype but I’ll leave this here now.”
CJ Carr is making a statement
It’s true that Carr has been very good so far this season, and his game has rounded into form over the last few games in particular. In five games as the starter, Carr has thrown for 1,280 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Michigan native has also completed over 67 percent of his passes, thrown just two interceptions, and added another score on the ground. The word efficient is used a lot when describing the 6-3, 210-pound signal caller.
The great part about Carr is that we are just getting a glimpse into how good he can be. After being virtually flawless against Purdue and Arkansas previously, we did see Carr miss several throws against Boise State last week, and that is going to happen as a younger quarterback. If his deep ball becomes a more consistent part of his game, then Carr has a chance to become an elite signal caller down the road.
Is Carr playing better than any quarterback in the country right now? That take does feel a little hot to me right now. Yes, he’s playing very well. It’s also great that we are even having this conversation. For far too long, the Fighting Irish have had too many issues at quarterback. Finding a player who has elite upside at the position is massive for the future of the program.
There are some really good quarterbacks in college football right now. I don’t think that we can discount how well guys like Dante Moore (Oregon) and Fernando Mendoza (Indiana) are playing right now. Carr is on his way up, but he still does have a ways to go.
