The Notre Dame fanbase didn’t quite know what to expect heading into the team’s matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks this weekend. There was little question that head coach Marcus Freeman’s squad was the more talented team, but the Fighting Irish have had a very uneven start to the year. Who knows what version of Notre Dame football you’re going to get each week.

After that early season uncertainty, Notre Dame came out with a vengeance on Saturday, dismantling the Razorbacks by a score of 56 to 13 on their home field. The Irish offense was fantastic, exploding for well over 600 total yards on the day. After a slow start, Chris Ash’s defense also showed key growth. This was a nice all-around performance down in SEC country.

Following this embarrassing loss, the Razorback faithful has become even more restless, and the future of head coach Sam Pittman has continued to be a hot topic of debate. Coach Pittman has been on the hot seat for some time now, and this type of loss can sometimes lead to decisions being made. It’s uncertain if a decision will come, but it’s hard to make a strong case for the future of your program after losing by 43 points in your home stadium.

As On3 Transfer Portal reporter Pete Nakos stated during the game, there is a timetable that makes the most sense to make a move, but Arkansas is not near it right now. Pittman has parameters in his conference that if his win percentage is .500 or above since 2021, the Razorbacks would owe him roughly $9.8 million. If he were under .500, then it would be roughly $6.9 million instead.

When is it time to make a move?

After the loss, Pittman now sits with a 29-27 record since 2021. That extra money on the buyout could be the difference between making a decision now or waiting it out a while longer. At some point, however, a decision needs to be made for the better of the program and not just for money. The leadership will decide when that time comes.

It will be fascinating to see the short-term and long-term outlook for Pittman and this Razorback program. It will also be fascinating to see if the Irish performance has any impact on either. Freeman’s group needed a big performance this weekend, and that is exactly what Notre Dame turned in for the fans at expense of the Arkansas present and future.
