Once the 2025 college football season officially ended for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the transfer portal conversation quickly began.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey was the first player to enter the portal, opening up his options for other opportunities. While Minchey was the team’s backup, his talent was never in question, and there were sure to be impressive suitors for his services.

After Minchey made his announcement, a report quickly came out about some early favorites for the talented signal-caller. That list included Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Florida, and North Texas. I also verified that Boston College has interest, but it has its eyes on a couple of other quarterbacks. Other programs were also expected to get into the picture.

Of that initial list of interested programs, Florida stood out. With DJ Lagway returning, the fit didn’t make much sense for Minchey. He wasn’t going to another program to be a backup. This move from the Fighting Irish was an attempt to find an opportunity as a starter.

Well, that potential fit is beginning to make a lot more sense after it was announced that Lagway was also entering the portal. That quickly changes the outlook for Florida and Minchey. They wouldn’t, in theory, be bringing Minchey in as a backup option. He would be coming to be the starter potentially.

There is still plenty of time for Minchey and his camp to figure out his best move, considering that the portal doesn’t even open until Jan. 2. It will be interesting to see where he chooses, and if Florida had the foresight to push for him as a potential starter.

The fit does seem a lot cleaner, and it would be a fun one under new head coach Jon Sumrall.

Kenny Minchey’s background

Before the season, Minchey and CJ Carr were locked up in a competitive battle to be the starting signal caller for Notre Dame. Many believed Minchey would get the nod, but the younger Carr won out last minute for head coach Marcus Freeman.

Minchey is a talented pocket passer who also has the legs to create things outside of structure. While things didn’t work out for him in South Bend, it was more an issue of timing. He is a talented overall quarterback with loads of upside and two years of eligibility remaining. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be a starting quarterback on the Power Four level. The tools are certainly there.

When Minchey was given opportunities to play, he showed off his talent. In six games played, Minchey has completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards, while also rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.

The 6-2, 208-pound passer was originally a member of the 2023 recruiting class for Notre Dame. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Minchey was rated as the No. 170 overall player, the No. 14 quarterback, and the No. 3 player in the state of Tennessee in the class.

He was originally committed to the Pitt Panthers before opting to flip to the Fighting Irish. Minchey redshirted during his first season to preserve a year of eligibility.
