The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off of a tremendous 2024 season that ended with a 40-22 Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. When a team has that level of success, it is difficult to keep a coaching staff fully together. It wasn't overly surprising that we saw a little bit of turnover for the Eagles, and it happened particularly on the offensive side of the football.
There was another hire for the offensive staff when it was announced that the Eagles are expected to hire Georgia assistant quarterbacks coach Montgomery VanGorder as an offensive assistant. VanGorder had been with the Bulldog program since the 2019 season, and also held the role as offensive quality control for the offense.
VanGorder was a former walk-on for the Notre Dame football team, and played for the Fighting Irish from 2014-17. During that stretch, he didn't throw any passes for the team but did hold the duty as the holder for the team. VanGorder spent the 2018 season with Youngstown State, where he threw for 1,929 yards and 15 total touchdowns.
On the coaching side of the conversation, VanGorder is viewed as a promising young football coach. Unfortunately for his time with the Notre Dame program, most remember the last name more than what Montgomery provided for the team. It is his father, former Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, who gets brought up quickly.
His father was the Notre Dame defensive coordinator during the 2014-16 seasons, although he was let go before that final season concluded. He was known as a terrible hire under former head coach Brian Kelly. The defense during that time was misused in a big way, and a ton of talent was wasted. That tenure was not remembered fondly.
Notre Dame football is in a strange spot in terms of 2026 tight end recruiting, but the outcome will be decided over the next several weeks
