The Notre Dame quarterback battle is set to rage on for the next couple of days, but a decision is expected to be made early next week (if not this Sunday) by the Fighting Irish staff. With that battle going down the stretch, reports have been flying everywhere about where things stand in the CJ Carr vs Kenny Minchey debate.

We have seen On3 reporter Pete Nakos come out recently and say that this was a 50/50 battle, but Minchey did have a slight lead. Others have been extremely hardheaded and swear up and down that it’s not a real competition, and Carr would win out in the end. Others have said that it could go either way, and no real separation has happened.

In the latest betting odds from SportsBetting.ag, they placed identical odds on both Minchey and Carr to win it at -120. They are clearly in the last camp of no real separation. Either the book has information that I could go either way, or there just isn’t enough information available to predict a clear favorite.

As I have reported lately, the momentum lies with Minchey heading down the stretch toward a decision. It’s his combination of athletic ability, upside as a passer, and cool temperament that has allowed him to go from a wildcard in this race to a legitimate option since the season ended. The Minchey smoke has continued to get stronger and stronger every day.

The next two days are extremely important to solidifying a final decision. For Minchey, it’s about keeping the lead and solidifying his standing. For Carr, it’s about having your best couple of days and showcasing what once made you a borderline five-star recruit. Let the best quarterback win in the end.

I just don’t agree that this is a 50/50 battle. I would argue that Minchey took a lead several days ago, and here’s what I wrote about his chances to verify that. The battle has been trending in this direction, despite what some have been saying.

My hope is that Notre Dame fans stand behind Minchey in a few days if he is the one named as the starter. It really is a great story, going from a pure wildcard to win the job earlier this offseason to a legitimate contender. He played so well, along with Carr, that Steve Angeli chose to transfer to Syracuse because of how the younger quarterbacks were playing. It has been a long offseason of hard work.
