Elijah Golden commitment to Notre Dame makes statement in two different areas that will be comforting for Fighting Irish fans
What the commitment of Elijah Golden means for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame football received a massive commitment on Saturday from 2026 Sarasota (Fla.) Cardinal Mooney defensive lineman Elijah Golden. The talented defender opted for the Fighting Irish over finalists Alabama, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech. He has been viewed as the finishing touch for an elite 2026 recruiting class under head coach Marcus Freeman for some time now.
At 6-4 and 275 pounds, Golden has the look of a future playmaking three technique. You are going to blink your eyes, and Golden will be hovering around 300 pounds, and still have the athleticism to make a ton of plays behind the line of scrimmage. That was the missing ingredient on the 2026 defensive line to go with Rodney Dunham, Ebenezer Ewetade, and Tiki Hola.
From a recruiting rankings perspective, this was a huge grab for Notre Dame. Golden currently ranks as the No. 162 overall player and No. 23 defensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. He has been heavily pursued by a long list of impressive suitors even outside of his finalists, including Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, Clemson, Florida State, and Auburn among many others.
Add in impressive production as a junior for Cardinal Mooney (61 total tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, eight quarterback hurries), and it’s easy to see why Golden was so important of an addition for the Irish. There are also, however, a couple of other major reasons why this was vital. It starts with the obvious, winning against some other good options.
Recruiting against the “big boys”
It wasn’t in the too distant past that most Notre Dame fans would concede a recruiting loss to Alabama for a top defensive lineman. Not only did you have to beat the Crimson Tide for Golden, Oklahoma also made a strong late push. That’s two SEC programs with plenty of money pursuing a defensive lineman they want, and the Irish were still able to win out.
Golden is also a Southeastern player as well, originally from Virginia, but spending the last couple of years in Florida. It would have been very easy for him to opt to stay down South and go to Tuscaloosa. Fortunately, the Notre Dame pitch was stronger than those regional ties.
Not only did Notre Dame have to outlast a couple of other prominent programs, they also had to fight against time.
The test of time
For some time now, the Fighting Irish had been the assumed leader for Golden. He was originally set to make his decision on July 26th, but opted to push that commitment date back to August 9th. Whenever a team is considered a leader for a player, having a commitment date pushed back can be a bit unsettling.
That would, in theory at least, give others an opportunity to up their offer and make a stronger final pitch. You aren’t only competing against some other top programs, but time as well. Notre Dame cured some BK PTSD and closed on a player they really wanted, from a very competitive area of the country, against other high powered programs.
This is a monumental victory, no matter what way you slice it.
