Former Notre Dame target unsurprisingly reopens his recruitment, but it won’t end up mattering for the Fighting Irish in the end

A former top Notre Dame top recruiting target has reopened his recruitment. It won’t matter for the Fighting Irish in the end.

Head coach Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers are off to a disastrous start for the 2025 college football season. They went into the year with National Championship aspirations, but all hope has dwindled after a 1-3 start, and outsiders are taking notice. That includes the current Tiger recruiting class, which saw one defection recently.

On Friday, Clemson was dealt with some extremely difficult news when 2026 Buford (Ga.) High School pass rusher Dre Quinn decommitted and reopened his commitment. Quinn committed to the Tigers back on June 19, which was a huge addition at the time. It felt like an impulsive decision at the time to some, which left the door open for teams to continue to pursue him.

Notre Dame Can Still Pursue talented Edge rusher Dre Quinn

Notre Dame was one of the schools that were on the short list for Quinn when he committed. Since that time, the Fighting Irish staff has made contact with hopes of remaining present if he did change his mind. While head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff did a good job overall, it doesn’t appear likely Quinn will give them a serious look. There has always been support around him for the Notre Dame program, but it isn’t an opinion that Quinn shares, at least not enough.

The team to beat for Quinn, as of now anyway, appears to be Texas. Rivals’ vice president of recruiting, Steve Wiltfong, recently logged an expert prediction for Quinn to land with the Longhorns, and it does seem to be the most likely landing spot for the Georgia defender.

From a recruiting rankings perspective, the opinions on Quinn vary quite a bit. He is considered a three-star recruit by 247Sports, coming in as the No. 34 EDGE in the country. Quinn is, however, considered a four-star recruit on the 247 Sports Composite and On3 Industry rankings, coming in as the No. 395 and No. 359 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class, respectively.

If you aren’t impressed by Quinn’s rankings, you most likely will be by his offer list. Some of the top programs that have pursued the talented pass rusher include the Fighting Irish, GeorgiaOhio StateTexasAlabamaMichiganOklahomaLSU, Miami, Tennessee, USC, Auburn, Florida State, Clemson, and Nebraska, among many others.

From a production perspective, Quinn had not quite been able to put it all together prior to this season. As a junior for Greater Atlanta Christian, the 6-4, 230-pound defensive end recorded 42 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Quinn also forced a fumble, recovered another, and hauled in seven receptions for 129 yards as a part-time player on offense.

As a senior with Buford, Quinn has been off to a strong start. In five games, he has recorded 26 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks. The Georgia native has also recorded another seven quarterback hurries and a blocked field goal.
