Notre Dame football under head coach Marcus Freeman has been recruiting on an elite level, especially in the 2026 recruiting class. The Fighting Irish staff already has their eyes turned to the 2027 group, and are building early relationships for what could be another fantastic haul. One of the top early names to know is 2027 LA Verne (Calif.) Damien safety Gavin Williams.

On film, you would be hard pressed to find a higher upside defensive back with Williams’ combination of range and ball skills. He is just starting to truly tap into his ceiling as a football player, and we have seen the demand strengthen big time for the California native. That includes the Fighting Irish and secondary coach Mike Mickens, who are big fans of Williams.

With the season that Notre Dame is expecting around the program, getting as many talented players to campus is a major priority. They will be welcoming Williams to South Bend on October 18th, which is their game against the USC Trojans. If you think that decision to get in town to see his home state team potentially lose, you are sorely mistaken.

Williams is rated as a four-star player by every major recruiting platform. On the 247Sports Composite ranking, Williams currently ranks as the No. 173 overall player, No. 15 safety, and No. 15 player in the state of California for the 2027 recruiting class. That is a territory that has consistently churned out next level talent, including for the Fighting Irish in the past.

A long list of impressive suitors have already begun to pursue Williams. Some of his top offers currently include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon, Tennessee, Michigan, USC, Utah, Florida State, Auburn, Michigan State, Arkansas, BYU, SMU, Arizona State, UCLA, Arizona, Syracuse, West Virginia, Washington, Cal, Mississippi State, UNC, and Oklahoma State among many others.

The 6-1, 180-pound defender has been a difference maker for Damien over the last two seasons. During that stretch, he has collected 85 total tackles, nine pass breakups, five pass breakups, five tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. His range and versatility are both fantastic, and offer a ton of developmental upside.
