Notre Dame legacy kicks off what could be the most insane recruiting run we have seen under Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish

Notre Dame football is entering one of the best recruiting runs Fighting Irish fans have seen.

James Halter, Central Catholic offensive lineman, soaks up the atmosphere of the game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas Longhorns at Ohio Stadium on Aug. 30, 2025.

Over the last several days, we have spent a lot of time breaking down the past weekend of action for Notre Dame football. On top of their 34-24 victory over the rival USC Trojans, it was also an extremely important recruiting weekend for the Fighting Irish staff. All the vibes were positive since that event concluded.

While the talk and speculation were all fun, we received our first actionable example of just how great that weekend was. Notre Dame landed a commitment from 2027 Pittsburgh (Pa.) Central Catholic four-star offensive tackle James Halter, who chose the Irish over Penn State and Ohio State. If that last name sounds familiar, it’s because Halter is the newest example of an Irish legacy to choose Notre Dame.

His father, Jordan Halter, played offensive line for Notre Dame from 1989 to 1993. That means that he saw some of the best football in the program’s history, playing for legendary head coach Lou Holtz. He now has a chance to watch his son play in the Blue and Gold, which has to be an incredibly rewarding feeling.

The younger Halter is considered a consensus four-star player by all major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, he is rated as the No. 125 overall player, the No. 12 offensive tackle, and the No. 6 player from the state of Pennsylvania for the 2027 recruiting class. Depending on who you talk to, the 6-5, 270-pound offensive lineman is projected at either offensive tackle or guard on the college level.

The Pennsylvania native has a healthy offer list — one you would expect from a talented Northern offensive lineman with great genetics. Some of Halter’s top offers include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Penn State, Nebraska, Auburn, Indiana, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Michigan State, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, UNC, NC State, Boston College, Rutgers, West Virginia, and Duke, among several others.

James Halter is just the beginning

Halter is a great early commitment for the Fighting Irish and offensive line coach Joe Rudolph, but it is just the beginning. Notre Dame left this past weekend in a great spot with several top 2027 recruits, and should be viewed as the leader for many of them. That includes Englewood (Co.) Cherry Creek offensive lineman Jackson Roper, who is also very high on the Irish program.

Others who Notre Dame should be considered favorites for right now include five-star running back Kemon Spell and four-star runner Amir Brown, North Carolina wide receiver AJ Roberts, tight ends Jaxon Dollar and Seneca Driver, Wisconsin defensive lineman Isaac Miller, top-50 cornerback Xavier Hasan, fellow talented cover man Ace Alston, and safety Marquis Bryant. All of which made the trip this past weekend.

When we look back at the recruiting weekend for the USC game, it could go down as perhaps the most important one under Freeman in his entire tenure. Saying this Irish staff knocked that one out of the park would be a massive understatement. The impact of that event isn’t going to stop anytime soon.
