We are fresh off the Notre Dame football staff offering over 100 talented recruits from the 2027 class during the Pot of Gold offer event. One takeaway that many had, which was interesting, is that there wasn’t a single offer extended to a quarterback. The idea, as of now, is for Gino Guidugli and the Fighting Irish staff to continue evaluating the top signal callers across the country, and start extending offers in May.

That means that spring visits are going to be huge, and Notre Dame is set to host a really talented quarterback this week for his first ever trip. Benton (Louis.) High School star Malachi Zeigler is expected in South Bend for a multi-day visit on March 26-27. Outside of the possibility of grabbing a Louisiana standout right from under Brian Kelly’s nose, Zeigler is also one of the more gifted passers in the 2027 class.

The 6-3, 205-pound passer is currently rated as a four-star recruit by On3, 247Sports, and Rivals, the three major recruiting platforms that have ranked him up until this point. Ziegler is currently rated as the No. 28 overall player, and No. 4 quarterback in the 2027 class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. That ranking also has Ziegler pegged as the third best player in Louisiana.

Some impressive programs have already been in hot pursuit of Zeigler, even as just a sophomore. Zeigler currently holds scholarship offers from Ole Miss, TCU, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Baylor, Texas Tech,, SMU, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Jackson State, and Grambling State. Other schools like Texas, LSU, and Texas A&M have also demonstrated major interest as well.

From a talent perspective, there is a lot to like about Zeigler. We will all get a much better understanding for whether he is a good fit for the Irish program after the visit. He is, however, definitely a player to keep close tabs on. The next couple of months will provide much better clarity for what the 2027 quarterback outlook will look like for Notre Dame.
