For Notre Dame fans who followed the 2024 recruiting class, you might remember who the first commitment in the class was. No, it wasn’t CJ Carr. No, it wasn’t Cam Williams. No, it wasn’t Jack Larsen. It was West Bloomfield (Mich.) High School defensive lineman Brandon Davis-Swain made a surprise early commitment to head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff.

As that name begins to ring some bells, yes, he obviously didn’t end up signing with Notre Dame. He was a recruit who committed way too early in the process, rushing his decision, and eventually decided to decommit. It was a split that was mutually agreed upon at the time. After some momentum for the home state Michigan Wolverines following that decision, Davis-Swain eventually ended up signing with head coach Deion Sanders and Colorado.

After two seasons in Boulder, Davis-Swain has decided to enter the transfer portal. The redshirt freshman will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. In nine games played over the last two seasons, Davis-Swain managed to collect 13 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, half a sack, and one pass breakup. There is certainly talent to work with there, but the next fit will tell a lot about the progress of Davis-Swain.

Brandon Davis-Swain’s background

When Swain came out in the 2024 class, he was a well-liked recruit across many major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Davis-Swain ended up ranked as the No. 240 overall player, the No. 31 defensive lineman, and the No. 4 player from the state of Michigan in the 2024 recruiting class. Carr was the top player who came out of the state of Michigan that year.

There was a long list of suitors coming after Davis-Swain back in the 2024 class. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, the Buffaloes, Michigan, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Penn State, USC, Miami, Auburn, Louisville, Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska, Kentucky, Boston College, Indiana, Illinois, UCLA, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Purdue, among others.

After originally coming in as a 263-pound defensive end, Davis-Swain has now developed into a 6-4, 290-pound interior defensive lineman. There is some versatility to work with here, possessing some good overall movement skills. While it won’t be for Notre Dame, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Davis-Swain have some solid options on the table. It is always fun to see where some past Irish recruiting targets end up and how their careers end up.
