Notre Dame football is fresh off a strong performance against Navy, coming out with a 49 to 10 victory against the rival Midshipmen this past weekend. Not only did the Fighting Irish win on the field, but they created a ton of momentum for the future off of it as well. Head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff just hosted an extremely impressive list of Irish targets, and the vibes around the program are extremely strong right now.

One of the more interesting targets who visited South Bend this past weekend was 2027 Louisville (Ky.) Atherton athlete Garyon Hobbs. While the fanbase doesn’t talk much about Hobbs overall, he is a player that Notre Dame has been fond of for some time now. His combination of versatility and upside is something that could project very well in the Chris Ash defense, or whoever is running that unit in the future.

With how strong the trip was, it isn’t much of a surprise to see Steve Wiltfong log an expert prediction for Hobbs to land with the Fighting Irish. As the vice president of recruiting for Rivals, Wiltfong is one of the leading voices in the recruiting space, and there is typically always great info behind these predictions. I share the optimism for Notre Dame landing the talented defender in the end.

If and when Notre Dame does land Hobbs, the fans will try to downplay the pickup. This is an extremely talented player who is going to need time to develop. If he is given that, Hobbs has the chance to become an impact defender.

Garyon Hobbs’ recruiting background

From a recruiting rankings perspective, Hobbs is not going to excite many. He is considered a three-star player by both 247 Sports and Rivals, while ESPN still hasn’t ranked him. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, the Kentucky native is currently rated as the No. 409 overall player, the No. 29 athlete, and the No. 8 player in the state of Kentucky for the 2027 recruiting class.

While those rankings aren’t great, the offer list for Hobbs is much more impressive. Some of the top programs that have offered include the Fighting Irish, Michigan, Oklahoma, Clemson, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Indiana, SMU, Michigan State, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Stanford, among others.

The 6-0, 215-pound defender is a player who brings unreal versatility to the table. Some programs view Hobbs as a safety, while others think he will eventually move inside to linebacker. The Fighting Irish view Hobbs similarly to current linebacker Jaiden Ausberry, a WILL linebacker who has the movement skills to also make some plays in space.
