Notre Dame football just received a second chance at one of the more dynamic offensive weapons in the country
Notre Dame football could be a major player for one of the more dynamic offensive weapons in the 2028 recruiting class.
The Oklahoma Sooners received some tough news this week when it was announced that 2028 Spring (Texas) Klein Oak running back Micah Rhodes was decommitting from the program, which was first reported by Aaron Wilson from KPRC 2 Houston. Considered to be the top running back in the 2028 recruiting class by some, this is now a huge opportunity for other elite programs to pursue him.
That could include Notre Dame.
Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are one of the programs who was early on Rhodes, and they were very high on the star runner. With Rhodes now back on the table, this now offers Notre Dame the chance to get back in the game. There will be a lot of suitors for the Texas native but as we have seen, the Irish aren’t afraid to compete on the recruiting trail under Freeman.
The Irish staff managed to complete their 2027 running back class over the last week with commitments from Lathan Whisenton and Isaiah Rogers. With that masterful performance in the last two recruiting cycles by running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider, this early finish now allows him to turn his full attention to the 2028 class. Even if it doesn’t eventually land them Ford, there should be a lot of excitement for what 2028 can bring.
It will be interesting to see if Notre Dame makes a strong push for Rhodes. If they do, the odds are they are a program to keep a close eye on with the recruiting impact we have seen.
Micah Rhodes’ recruiting background
Rhodes is considered to be a four-star and a top-100 player by each of the major recruiting platforms that has ranked him. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Rhodes currently rates as the No. 35 overall player, the No. 2 running back, and the No. 4 player from the state of Texas for the 2028 recruiting class. This is the definition of an elite overall player.
Like his rankings, Rhodes also boasts an elite offer list. Some of the top options for the Texas native includes the Fighting Irish, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, USC, Texas Tech, Florida State, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Arizona, TCU, Baylor, Cal, and Houston, among several others.
As a sophomore at Klein Oak, the 5-10, 187-pound running back managed to rush for 1,309 yards and 21 touchdowns. Rhodes earned First-Team All-District and MaxPreps Sophomore All-American honors for his efforts.
