Several favorites are already separating themselves for former Notre Dame QB Kenny Minchey since entering the transfer portal
There are some early teams to know for former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey since entering the portal.
Notre Dame football had its first loss of the offseason when former quarterback Kenny Minchey opted to enter the transfer portal. After falling short last offseason in the quarterback battle between him and CJ Carr, Minchey took on the role as the main backup for the team. The redshirt sophomore did do some nice things in the role, but nobody is surprised to see Minchey eyeing other opportunities that are out there.
While the portal doesn’t officially open until January 2-16, programs are already doing their research, due diligence, and back channelling for interest with the agents of those who enter. Even though Minchey just officially entered the portal on Monday, there is already a long list of programs that have shown interest. The Tennessee native is going to have quite a decision in front of him.
Steve Wiltfong, who is the vice president of recruiting for Rivals, put out a piece on early Intel for the Minchey portal experience. That included some schools to watch. That list included Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Florida, and North Texas. Those are some of the early programs to watch.
Boston College is also a school that I have been told has interest in Minchey, but there are a couple of things that will need to happen to make that work.
Of that list, Texas Tech stands out as a really intriguing option with Behren Morton heading to the NFL. Both Florida and Cincinnati could be interesting depending on what happens with the current starting quarterbacks. With the Gators changing coaches this offseason, there are some questions about whether DJ Lagway will stay put. Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby is also being rumored as a potential portal entrant, who would have a massive market.
What is a team getting in Kenny Minchey?
Before the season, Kenny Minchey and CJ Carr were locked up in a very competitive quarterback battle to be the starting signal caller for Notre Dame. Many believed that Minchey would get the nod, but the younger Carr won out last minute for head coach Marcus Freeman. At 6-2 and 208 pounds, Minchey is a talented pocket passer who also has the legs to create things outside of structure. While things didn’t work out for him in South Bend, it was more an issue of timing. He is a talented overall quarterback with loads of upside and two years of eligibility remaining. There is no reason why he shouldn’t be a starting quarterback on the Power Four level. The tools are certainly there.
When Minchey was given opportunities to play, he showed off the talent that he brings to the table. In six games played, Minchey has completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards, while also rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.
The 6-2, 208-pound passer was originally a member of the 2023 recruiting class for Notre Dame. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Minchey was rated as the No. 170 overall player, the No. 14 quarterback, and the No. 3 player in the state of Tennessee in the class. He was originally committed to the Pitt Panthers before opting to flip to the Fighting Irish. Minchey redshirted during his first season on campus to preserve a year of eligibility for him.
