If you think back to the offseason prior to the 2023 college football season kicking off, Notre Dame fans were buzzing about wide receiver Tobias Merriweather and his potential breakout campaign. Those same fans were screaming loudly for Merriweather the year prior despite being only a true freshman, but saw a flash with a 41-yard touchdown on his only reception of that season. With getting his feet wet, 2023 was going to be his season.
As everyone knows, that breakout didn't come. That sophomore season was impacted by constant drops and inconsistency. The 6-4, 198-pound pass catcher ended that season with just 14 receptions for 284 yards and two touchdowns. While the volume wasn't there, Merriweather did showcase his ability to create some big plays, averaging 20.3 yards per reception.
Due to a loss of confidence, and a fallout with then wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey, Merriweather opted to enter the transfer portal. He ended up landing with the Cal Golden Bears, and there was some excitement for what Merriweather could accomplish due to his combination of size, length, and long speed. It felt like an optimistic landing spot.
Merriweather, once again, is back in the transfer portal just after one season. He dealt with injuries in that lone year, and failed to make his impact. In just five games played, Merriweather managed to haul in 11 receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown. It was a major letdown. There were reports that Merriweather had a strong spring, but still decided to hit the market again.
Where Merriweather lands next, nobody really knows. The Washington native certainly has talent, but so far, he hasn't been able to reach his potential. Notre Dame also played him in seven games back in 2022, so unless there is a medical year added on, the 2025 season will be the last for Merriweather.
