Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti walks the field Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, ahead of the Peach Bowl and semifinal game of the College Football Playoff against the Oregon Ducks at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Notre Dame football broke in three new defensive coaches this offseason. That includes secondary coach Aaron Henry, who is taking over for Mike Mickens to tutor an extremely talented defensive back room.

Considered to be a tremendous coach and developer of talent, most Fighting Irish fans should expect Henry to keep this room elite going into the 2026 college football season. Along with head coach Marcus Freeman, it should also be expected for Notre Dame to keep recruiting on a very high level in the secondary. The 2027 recruiting class will show just how high a recruiting impact Henry can have.

Henry and the staff extended an extremely intriguing offer this week to Cincinnati (Ohio) Princeton cornerback Monsanna Torbert Jr., who is currently committed to the Indiana Hoosiers and head coach Curt Cignetti. With the recent success for the Indiana program, it feels like a bit of a competitive rivalry could be on the horizon between these two in-state programs. This could be an extremely interesting recruiting battle in the future.

With Ace Alston, Xavier Hasan, and Khalil Terry already committed in the 2027 class for Notre Dame, there are only a couple of spots remaining in the secondary. It’ll be interesting to see if Torbert gets placed on the short list for key targets moving forward.

Monsanna Torbert Jr.’s recruiting background

Torbert is considered to be a four-star player by the majority of recruiting platforms. The outlier is ESPN, which currently has him pegged as a three-star recruit. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Torbert sits as the No. 186 overall player, the No. 26 cornerback, and the No. 7 player from the state of Ohio for the 2027 recruiting class right now.

There have been some impressive programs that have continued to push for Torbert, even after he committed to Indiana in January. Some of the teams that have offered the Ohio native include the Fighting Irish, the Hoosiers, Michigan, Auburn, Iowa, Kentucky, Pitt, Maryland, Cincinnati, and Purdue, among several others. There are some other programs that are also showing interest in Torbert right now.

As a junior in 2025, Torbert put together a tremendous season for Princeton. In ten games, the 5-10, 158-pound cover man managed to record 40 total tackles, three interceptions, and three more pass breakups. He is also a dual-threat quarterback who threw for 1,791 yards and 26 touchdowns, while also rushing for 450 yards and four more scores. Although he is small, Torbert is a tremendous overall athlete who can do a lot of things for a team.
