Notre Dame pushing for a current SEC commit – Eyeing early recruiting statement under one of their newest coaching hires
Notre Dame football set to make a push for dynamic defensive back committed elsewhere.
As the former secondary coach, Mike Mickens recruited, developed, and coached on an all-time level with the Notre Dame program. While losing Mickens to the Baltimore Ravens this offseason was a huge blow, Mickens left the secondary room for the Fighting Irish in a great place. It is conceivable to believe that former Illinois defensive coordinator Aaron Henry will walk into that job and maintain excellence for what Mickens and head coach Marcus Freeman have built.
It is early, but Henry is already putting his imprint on the 2027 recruiting class. Notre Dame already holds commitments from cornerbacks Xavier Hasan and Ace Alston, as well as safety Khalil Terry in the class, meaning that Henry walks into a tremendous group already. There is still a spot or two to add, which also means that Henry has his eyes on some other talented targets to bring in. There is a lot of talent still out there to push for.
Notre Dame made an extremely interesting offer this week to 2027 Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage cornerback Amare Nugent, who is currently committed to the Florida Gators. In the wonderful world of recruiting, commitments don’t mean as much as they used to. It’ll be interesting to see where things go between Nugent and the Fighting Irish moving forward.
Nugent committed to the Gators back in January, meaning that this commitment is still very new. Whether Notre Dame is able to get Nugent on campus this offseason will be an indicator for just how open he is to other programs. Notre Dame certainly has an easy sell to prospective defensive backs right now. Keeping close tabs on the Florida native will be important.
Amare Nugent’s recruiting background
Nugent is considered to be a near-consensus four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Nugent currently sits as the No. 158 overall player, the No. 16 cornerback, and the No. 16 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class. ESPN is the lone outlier on Nugent, which currently rates him as a three-star player.
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but there is a long list of prominent programs currently pushing for Nugent. Some of his top offers right now include the Fighting Irish, the Gators, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, Indiana, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Colorado, Maryland, Mississippi State, Minnesota, NC State, UCF, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Oregon State, UNC, Boston College, Syracuse, and Purdue, among others.
As a junior this past season, Nugent put together a tremendous season for American Heritage. The 5-11, 178-pound cover man managed to collect 27 total tackles, two interceptions, and two pass breakups. Nugent also had a tackle for loss and a sack during the season.
