With wide receiver recruiting trending upward for Notre Dame football recently, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff are now taking some bigger swings at top pass-catching targets. In the 2028 recruiting class, the staff extended an offer recently to Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft wide receiver Lorenzo McMullen Jr., one of the elite players in his class. The demand for McMullen is going to be high, and while the Irish staff understands that, they are getting ready for a fight.

While Ohio State hasn’t offered McMullen quite yet, that feels like just a matter of time. The city of Cincinnati has been very good to the Buckeyes in the past, and I am sure that they already have their eyes on a player like McMullen. Whenever that offer does come, Ohio State will certainly be difficult to beat.

With former wide receiver Brian Hartline leaving to take the head coach job with South Florida this offseason, however, it does bring a little more confidence that other programs can compete for top wide receiver targets. That could be the path for the Irish going into the Buckeye State and landing a player of McMullen’s caliber. Only time will tell how successful that push will be, but he is certainly someone to keep a close eye on moving forward.

Lorenzo McMullen Jr.’s recruiting background

McMullen is considered to be a consensus four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, McMullen is currently pegged as the No. 59 overall player, the No. 10 wide receiver, and the No. 3 player from the state of Ohio for the 2028 recruiting class. The individual 247 Sports ranking has the Ohio native ranked even higher, sitting as the No. 15 overall player and the No. 4 wide receiver in the class.

Despite just coming off his sophomore season, McMullen has already been pursued by some top programs in all of college football. Some of McMullen’s top offers so far include the Fighting Irish, Oregon, Louisville, Indiana, Pitt, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan State, Maryland, Cincinnati, and Purdue, among several others. That list promises to continue to expand heading into his junior season.

The 6-1, 170-pound pass catcher put together a tremendous sophomore season for Tast. Helping the team to an undefeated season, McMullen managed to haul in 41 receptions for 737 yards and 20 touchdowns, an average of 18 yards per reception. The 6-6 high jumper puts his athletic skills on display, possessing some absurd playmaking potential and upside as a football player.
