Notre Dame is a team to know for a former top recruit that the Fighting Irish get a second chance with via the transfer portal
There is a second chance for Notre Dame football with a top recruit from the past.
Notre Dame football is in the market to bring in a talented wide receiver or two from the transfer portal this offseason, but the board has continued to become smaller over the last few days. Luckily for head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish, there always appears to be some wide receiver talent available. That includes a couple of recent defections from the Ohio State Buckeyes.
While Notre Dame is already on former Buckeye pass catcher Mylan Graham, and that staff has managed to get him on campus this week, they are also a school to know for former five-star Quincy Porter. According to Steve Wiltfong, the vice president of recruiting for Rivals, Notre Dame is already a team of interest for the New Jersey native. Other schools mentioned were Michigan, Tennessee, Miami, Washington, Auburn, South Carolina, and UCLA.
If you think back to the 2025 class, the Irish had a very high opinion of Porter, and the talented wide receiver even made a visit to Notre Dame in the past. While the competition will be fierce, it appears that Porter has some real interest in them. With Porter wanting to be the top option in a passing offense, Notre Dame could make an easy pitch for the vacant boundary receiver spot right now.
Whether Notre Dame can close on Porter will depend on whether it can convince him to come on campus for a visit. Their pitch, on the usage and NIL sides, will have to be pristine. There is a lot of interest in Porter. Notre Dame will have to be ready because this will not be an easy battle for the Fighting Irish staff to win.
Quincy Porter’s career background
Porter was considered to be a consensus top-100 player by each of the major recruiting platforms coming out in the 2025 recruiting class. On the 247 Sports Composite rankings, the New Jersey native ended up rated as a five-star, the No. 23 overall player, the No. 5 wide receiver, and the No. 1 player from the state of New Jersey for the 2025 class.
There was a long list of impressive suitors who were after Porter at the time. Some of his top offers included the Fighting Irish, the Buckeyes, Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Miami, Florida, Oregon, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Penn State, Florida State, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Pitt, Illinois, Boston College, Michigan State, Washington, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Minnesota, UNC, Maryland, Syracuse, Duke, Stanford, and Rutgers, among several others.
During his career at Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic, Porter hauled in an impressive 133 receptions for 2,624 yards and 38 touchdowns in three seasons. That’s an average of 19.7 yards per reception, an incredible average for a wide receiver standing at 6-4 and 210 pounds. Only playing in five games for the Buckeyes this past season, the talented pass catcher hauled in just four receptions for 59 yards.
