Head coach Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame football are finishing up a very successful transfer portal period, and the Fighting Irish now look ready to make a strong national championship run heading into the 2026 college football season.

In the world of the portal and NIL, the college landscape can completely alter in a flash. While Notre Dame is one of the best programs out there when it comes to retention, every team will lose some solid younger talent at times.

For the most part, the Irish retained the players they wanted back for 2026, while adding eight extremely important contributors from the portal. One of the more surprising defections was true freshman wide receiver Scrap Richardson, whom the staff was high on for his long-term future. As a raw player, however, there was going to be a long runway toward becoming a valuable contributor to the wide receiver room in South Bend.

Scrap Richardson narrowing down new home in the transfer portal

It appears that Richardson is narrowing in on a new home in the portal. According to Jeffrey Lee, a senior editor over at AuburnSports.com of the On3 network, he likes the former Irish pass catcher to land with the Auburn Tigers.

Richardson was originally committed to head coach Alex Golesh while he was at USF, so that connection makes a lot of sense. Auburn is in desperate need of wide receivers, so it will be interesting to see how long it takes Richardson to make his mark.

The talent is easy to see with Richardson, who boasts impressive explosiveness and home-run speed. How quickly he learns the nuances of the position will determine just how much impact Richardson can make next season.

Scrap Richardson’s career background

Although Richardson entered his Notre Dame career with a ton of promise, he never played in a regular-season game for the Fighting Irish. The Georgia native dazzled the fanbase during his first and only Blue and Gold Game last offseason, but that will end up being the highlight of his career in South Bend.

The 6-0, 190-pound athlete was once viewed as a huge recruiting win for Notre Dame back in the 2025 class. Once a USF commit as a defensive back, Richardson had a lot of looks from several impressive programs once he decommitted. Some of Richardson’s top offers included the Fighting Irish, Alabama, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, UNC, and Duke, among others.

With Richardson being a high school quarterback and defensive back, his road toward becoming a dynamic college wide receiver was always going to be a bit long. During his senior season at Greenville (Ga.) At High School, Richardson threw for 916 yards and six touchdowns. As a runner, the talented athlete also rushed for 1,071 yards and five more scores, while also recording 77 total tackles, one interception, and six tackles for loss on defense.

The talent for Richardson is easy to see. Finding the best position and opportunity for the Georgia native will be key at his next stop.
