While it isn’t the biggest need on the Notre Dame roster, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting still have interest in potentially bringing in a veteran nickel to improve their depth on the back end. They had interest initially in former Iowa State defensive back Jontez Williams for the spot in the transfer portal, but he ended up signing with the USC Trojans before he could make it to South Bend. Since then, things have gotten a little quiet regarding potential fits.

It appears that the Irish staff is still pursuing some talented defensive backs to solidify another elite secondary heading into the 2026 college football season. There is a new name to know: former Utah standout Smith Snowden. It has been reported by Blair Angulo of 247 Sports that Snowden is visiting Notre Dame on Thursday. That comes after checking out Michigan, and with plans of visiting Oregon this weekend.

As you can tell, there is some high demand for Snowden right now. There is no telling where Notre Dame stands with Snowden, but we will have a lot better idea once the visit concludes. The Irish defense is set to return All-American cornerback Leonard Moore, as well as Christian Gray, Adon Shuler, and Tae Johnson. The lone missing link is a proven nickel defender. Someone like Snowden would fit great in a rotation with sophomore cornerback Dallas Golden.

Smith Snowden’s career background

Snowden was originally a member of the 2023 recruiting class for Utah. He was considered to be a consensus four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Snowden finished rated as the No. 199 overall player, the No. 21 cornerback, and the No. 3 player from the state of Utah. Snowden is also considered a four-star and the No. 3 cornerback available in the transfer portal currently.

When the 5-10, 185-pound cover man was coming out of Lehi (Utah) High School, he had a long list of potential suitors. Some of Snowden’s top offers included the Utes, Tennessee, Colorado, Northwestern, BYU, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, Virginia, Washington State, and Wisconsin, among many others.

In total, Snowden played in 36 games for Utah over the last three seasons. Still only 20 years old, he has played a ton of football and has been ultra-productive. During his career, he had managed to rack up 92 total tackles, four interceptions, 17 pass breakups, and six tackles for loss. While he has played a lot on the outside during his career, Snowden’s game projects very well in the slot.
