Arch Manning made a tough admission about one thing he wants back from Ohio State’s win over Texas
Ohio State got the best of Manning in his first road start.
The Ohio State Buckeyes got the job done over the weekend, opening their season with a 14-7 win against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns. Strong defense and just enough offense carried Ohio State past Texas in front of a packed crowd.
The Buckeyes’ defense rose to the challenge of slowing down Arch Manning and the Longhorns’ highly dangerous offense. Texas totaled 335 yards, but much of that came in the fourth quarter after it fell behind by two scores and was forced to press. Manning finished 17-of-30 for 170 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
That interception came when cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. read the route of receiver Ryan Wingo and stepped in front of a pass that hung in the air too long. After the game, Manning admitted he should have handled the play differently.
“They were playing man, and I forced it. Nothing was there—I should’ve just taken off, made a play with my feet, and lived to play another down,” Manning said. “Can’t have those turnovers. When you lose the turnover battle, you lose the game. That’s what happened today.”
Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia couldn’t have asked for a better debut performance from his unit. Manning was sacked once and nearly intercepted a second time, while the Buckeyes held Texas scoreless until the fourth quarter. Senior cornerback Davison Igbinosun recorded 10 tackles, and linebacker Arvell Reese added nine tackles and a sack.
Safeties Sonny Styles and Caleb Downs also stood out, combining for 11 tackles. Ohio State limited Texas to just five-of-14 on third downs and one-of-five on fourth downs, highlighted by a key goal-line stand. The interior defensive line, anchored by Eddrick Houston and Kayden McDonald, played a pivotal role in shutting down the Longhorns.
Next up for Ohio State is a home matchup with Grambling State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game should give the Buckeyes an opportunity to rotate in some backups, including quarterbacks behind starter Julian Sayin.
