Ohio State is coming off of their bye week and will host Nebraska on Saturday. It is known that left tackle Josh Simmons is out for the season after an injury against Oregon, but now it appears the Buckeyes have another injury worry to sort through.
According to Eleven Warriors, safety Lathan Ransom had to leave practice last week with what is said to be a foot injury. The severity of said injury is unknown at this time because the Big Ten doesn’t force injury reports out like some other conferences do during the week.
Ryan Day was asked about it on Tuesday, but gave the answer you’d expect.
"We're not going to talk about any other injury situations,” Day said after ruling out Simmons for the season.
To no surprise, Day didn’t say whether or not Ransom would be able to play against Nebraska. The availability report that comes out a couple of hours before the game will likely be where the answer comes from.
Ransom has been one of the very best safeties in college football this season. The fifth-year senior has 29 tackles and already has a career-high five tackles for a loss. Ransom has forced two fumbles and has a fumble recovery.
Ohio State’s safety duo of Ransom and sophomore Caleb Downs may just be the best in the country. Without Ransom, the Buckeyes would be losing a key leader for the defense and one of the very best players that it has to offer.
The Buckeyes moved Sonny Styles to linebacker from safety this year where he is a starter. Past Ransom, the Buckeyes will rely on younger safeties like Malik Hartford and true freshman Jaylen McClain.
Ransom was limited to nine games last season due to injury and has played in six games this season. Overall, the Buckeyes safety has played in 47 career games in Columbus. That is a lot of experience to not have on the field.
Ohio State plays Penn State in two weeks and that is likely their toughest game remaining in the regular season. Whether or not Ransom is available going forward is a big question mark that just hasn’t been answered yet.
