Former Ohio State standout QB Justin Fields is trying to get his football career back on the right path with his second NFL team in 2024.

After being traded for hardly anything by the Chicago Bears, the Steelers brought in Fields after already adding Russell Wilson.

If you know anything about the NFL, it doesn’t matter that Mike Tomlin is calling Wilson the starter months before the season starts. This week with OTAs beginning, Fields spoke on what his plans are in 2024.

"To be honest, I'm taking it day by day. I'm definitely competing. I think Russ knows that we're competing against each other every day," Fields told reporters on Tuesday after the Steelers’ first OTA session. "Him being out there, for me, that helps me get better, us pushing each other. I mean, I definitely don't have the mindset of me just sitting all year, so I'm coming in every day giving it all I got."

Fields is a first-round pick that dealt with a lot of moving pieces while with the Bears, and yes much of that has to do with the player he became. Now with the Steelers on what is essentially a one-year deal, Fields wants to get on the field before being a free agent next offseason.

Unseating a veteran like Wilson won’t be easy, but the concept is simple. If Fields can control the offense and move the mall more fluidly down the field than Wilson, the Steelers will end up starting him. Whether it is with his legs that aren’t an issue in his game — or he is able to show more consistency with his arm — Fields has the upside to be more than Wilson for Pittsburgh.

Between the two, the Steelers are not investing a whole lot of money in the quarterback room. Such a thing makes the choice easier when they have to go with who wins the job.

The battle quietly starts now in OTAs and will continue into training camp. At any point Wilson could have firm control of the job if he takes care of business, it could go either way. We at least know that Fields plans to play for the Steelers in 2024 and become the starter. Only time will tell if that happens.
